A large audience attended the international conference dedicated to the Litoranea Veneta, hosted at the M9 Museum of the 20th Century in Mestre (Venice), where DeltaMed – Association of Mediterranean Deltas ETS participated as co-organizer, contributing to discussions on the management of delta territories, climate resilience, and the enhancement of Mediterranean waterways.

The initiative represented an important opportunity for dialogue among institutions, land reclamation consortia, universities, and international experts, with particular attention to the strategic role of delta and coastal areas in addressing climate change challenges.

Among the main speeches was that of Giorgio Piazza, President of DeltaMed, who in his presentation “The Litoranea Veneta: a brand” highlighted the value of the historic waterway as an identity, cultural, and tourism asset capable of connecting territories and communities across the Upper Adriatic and the Mediterranean.

Also noteworthy was the contribution of Andrea Pegoraro, President of the Veneto Orientale Land Reclamation Consortium and member of DeltaMed, who emphasized the need to integrate hydraulic safety, environmental protection, and sustainable development in a territorial context increasingly exposed to the effects of climate change.

During the conference, Stefano Calderoni, President of the Pianura di Ferrara Land Reclamation Consortium and also a member of DeltaMed, presented the serial candidacy project of the Reclamation Landscapes for UNESCO Cultural Heritage status, underlining the historical, landscape, and cultural value of territories shaped by land reclamation works.

An international perspective was provided by Dr. Rafael Sánchez Navarro, speaking on behalf of the Comunidad de Regantes de la Derecha del Ebro and the Sindicat Agrícola de l’Ebre, with the presentation “The protection of coastal territories from climate change. Another Mediterranean case: the Ebro Delta,” offering an important comparison of adaptation and protection strategies for Mediterranean delta territories.

The event confirmed the role of DeltaMed as a cooperation platform among Mediterranean delta territories, promoting the exchange of best practices and a shared vision for the protection and enhancement of these strategic ecosystems.
