On 22 June, during the presentation of the ANBI Observatory Report on Climate Scenarios and Water Resources, DeltaMed President Giorgio Piazza brought the perspective of the Mediterranean’s major deltas to the national debate, stressing their increasing vulnerability to climate change.

In his speech, Piazza explained how declining river flows are intensifying saltwater intrusion, threatening agriculture, ecosystems and freshwater supplies. This challenge is shared by many Mediterranean deltas, from the Ebro and the Po to the Nile.

Looking at international experiences, Piazza referred to the Nile Delta, where salt-tolerant rice varieties are being tested to help ensure food security for the large population living in the delta.

He also recalled the experience of Eastern Veneto during the 2022 drought, when emergency land reclamation measures helped limit saltwater intrusion into the Livenza River, protecting local communities, agriculture and tourism.

“Mediterranean deltas are increasingly facing the same challenges and need coordinated responses.” This is the message promoted by DeltaMed, which continues to foster international cooperation for sustainable water management and the protection of delta regions.
