The Mediterranean Deltas Association – DeltaMed expresses its deep sorrow for the passing of Manel Masià Marsà, a leading figure for the Ebro Delta and the first President of DeltaMed.

Masià, who passed away at the age of 88, led the Comunidad General de Regantes del Canal de la Derecha del Ebro for more than forty years, standing out for his constant commitment to the development and modernization of irrigation infrastructure in the area. During his long tenure, he promoted significant improvements in the efficiency of the canal network and sluice systems, as well as the gradual digitalization of water distribution, making a decisive contribution to the sustainability and competitiveness of rice cultivation in the Delta.

Alongside his local commitment, Masià was one of the promoters of the creation of DeltaMed, becoming its first President. Under his leadership, the Association launched a path of international cooperation among Mediterranean delta territories, involving regions from different countries – including the deltas of the Po, Rhône, Danube and Nile – with the aim of protecting particularly fragile ecosystems and promoting sustainable development of local communities.

His pioneering vision helped strengthen dialogue among territories facing common challenges, such as water resource management, environmental protection and support for traditional agricultural activities.

DeltaMed remembers with gratitude his dedication, expertise and his ability to build relationships between institutions and territories, leaving a lasting impact on cooperation among Mediterranean deltas.

The Association extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and to all those who shared with him both a professional and personal journey.
